Drop Contest 11-6
Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.-It was an offensive explosion at historic Witter Field as the Battle Creek Bombers (31-36, 15-17) took down the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (23-44, 11-21) by a score of 11-6. The Rafters fell behind early and were never able to recover as they kept chipping away at the deficit but could not overcome the Bombers.
It was a horror 1st inning for Jason Freeman (Texas A&M) as he threw 34 pitches, faced ten batters and gave up 6 runs while the Rafters defense also committed two errors. Freeman was able to settle down as the game went on but his pitch count climbed too high and was finished after five innings in which he allowed seven runs, four of which were earned.
Wisconsin Rapids would not go away however. After scoring a run in the 2nd, the Rafters would put up three runs highlighted by a Zack Domingues (Long Beach State) two RBI single. Wisconsin Rapids would continue to tack on runs, which included a Keelin Rasch (Louisiana Monroe) RBI double in the 5th to tie the Rafters’ single season doubles record.
It would be in the top of the 8th where Battle Creek put the game to bed as they scored three runs. The rally was orchestrated by the top of the Bombers’ lineup as they attacked a beleaguered Rafters’ bullpen.
Every Northwoods League team will be on break Tuesday as a select team of NWL players will take part in the Big League Dreams Showcase down in Madison, WI. The Rafters and Bombers will resume their series Wednesday as Element Mobile is presenting the return of the world’s hottest entertainment act, the ZOOperstars! First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
