Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. – The return from the All-Star Break didn’t go as planned for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (3-12), dropping their game 18-0 against the Madison Mallards (8-6-1) Friday night. The Mallards led from the get-go and stayed consistent throughout the night to claim the big win. The Mallards sprayed 18 hits across the night and had a nine-run eighth inning as part of their win, with six players collecting multiple hits. Landon Gaz had the only hit for the Rafters, while Brent Gallegos allowed two earned runs in three innings and Jafet Martinez none in 1.1 innings.

The Mallards scored two in the top of the first on a pair of RBIs off Rafters starter Jeremy Jones (0-2), then added another on an RBI single in the third to make it 3-0.

Another three runs came across for Madison in the top of the fourth off Wisconsin Rapids’ Jones, all on RBI singles from the Mallards.

The offense continued rolling for Madison in the top of the fifth, adding three runs to the lead to make it 9-0 against Rafters reliever Brent Gallegos.

Gallegos had a pair of shutout innings to follow but in the seventh, Landon Dessart struggled in his debut and allowed eight runs before Jafet Martinez came in and allowed one of his own to make it 18-0.

Martinez tossed a scoreless ninth, but it wasn’t enough as the Rafters offense was silent against the five Mallards pitchers.

The loss was the Rafters’ first shutout of the season, and they’ll look to avoid a streak Saturday with a rematch against the Mallards. First pitch of Saturday’s game is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. and will be broadcast for video on NWL+ and for radio on WFHR 97.5 FM/1320 AM.
