The only mascot in Wisconsin Rapids Rafters team history was introduced to the public on May 10th, 2010. The team’s week long “Name The River Rat Mascot” contest featured five finalist submissions: Rocky, Rollie, Ronnie, Rusty and what would ultimately be voted the winner, Rosco.
The Rat appearance and “Rafters” nickname pays homage to the strong logging and paper industry of Wisconsin Rapids. The men employed to handle driving the logs down the rivers were commonly referred to as “river rats”. It was in recognition of these pioneers that the ownership group chose to move forward with this particular theme. Before the final decision was made, there was also consideration given to honoring the cranberry industry in Wisconsin, and using a “bogging” theme for the team nickname and mascot.
