Bombers Continue to Roll, Earn Third-Straight Sweep and Seventh-Straight Win

Battle Creek, Mich. – In front of an energetic group of 3,000 elementary schoolers, Battle Creek’s team effort guided them to their seventh win on the year and third consecutive sweep.

An RBI single to start the game for Green Bay (2-6), the Bullfrogs took an early 1-0 lead over Battle Creek. An early deficit is something that the Bombers were used to by now.

Battle Creek (7-1) wouldn’t respond until the third inning, Gavin Homer (McHenry County) got the rally started with a lead-off double. Nick Vasic (McHenry County) would reach on an error, allowing Homer to tie the game. His first of two RBI on the day, Tom Stoffel (Virginia Tech) knocked Vasic home to take a 2-1 Battle Creek lead.

Making his first start for the Bombers this season, Christian Griffin (West Alabama) walked a runner with one out in the fourth. The Bullfrogs stole second and third base easily and scored the tying run on a wild pitch from Griffin.

Tied at two, the Bombers would take advantage of walks themselves. Three consecutive walks led to a Logan Kaletha (John A. Logan) two RBI single to left, scoring Storm Joop (University of Indianapolis) and J.D. Mundy (Virginia Tech). With a 4-2 lead, Griffin would start the fifth inning with an error on the mound after mishandling a comeback ground ball. Green Bay took advantage of the error, garnering back-to-back singles with two outs to cut Battle Creek’s lead to 4-3.

Both teams were quiet in the fifth inning, but the Bombers produced runs off plenty of Green Bay free passes in the sixth. Homer was hit by a pitch to start, followed by a strikeout by Kaletha. Vasic would then get hit by a pitch for a second time in the game and Nick Walker (Austin Peay) reached on an error by the left fielder. With bases loaded, Stoffel would crank a gap shot to right-center field for an RBI single. Leading 5-2, the Bombers weren’t done. Walker scored from third on a wild pitch and Aaron Antonini (Middle Tennessee State) racked in his first RBI of the year, bringing in Stoffel with a double and making it a 8-3 Bombers advantage.

Though unable to score after the fifth inning, Green Bay had chances. The Bullfrogs left ten runners stranded, and had a runner on base in all but one inning. Griffin battled out of several jams, while T.J. Shook (Oakland University) pitched three scoreless innings of work.

Battle Creek added one more insurance run, after back-to-back walks which loaded the bases. Welch was hit by a pitch which brought home the ninth run for Battle Creek.

Colton Bradley (Central Michigan) closed the game for Battle Creek, retiring three-straight batters.

Battle Creek will hit the road tomorrow for an away game in Kenosha. The Bombers will see the Kingfish at 7:05 CT for the first time this season. Dylan Givens (John A. Logan) is set to take the hill for his second start of the summer. Coverage will begin on the Bombers Radio Network with Neil Doyle and Jake Hromada ten minutes prior to first pitch.
