Wisconsin Rapids, Wisc. – The Battle Creek Bombers (38-28, 18-12) fell in both games to the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (49-18, 22-9) in extras 4-3 and 9-1 on Monday evening.

Game One:

Battle Creek fell behind early, as starter Tyler Garam (Greensboro College) allowed a run with two outs. A bad pickoff attempted allowed the runner to move from first to third, which eventually led to an RBI single and 1-0 Rapids lead.

Down 1-0, the Bombers got a leadoff single from Nahwon Norkeh (Tennessee Wesleyan). Justin Felix (Arkansas State) brought him home on a double to tie the game. A familiar face would step to the plate, Storm Joop (University of Indianapolis). Joop started his Battle Creek return by cranking a three-run home run to left center to give the Bombers a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Garam got in some trouble. The Rafters loaded the bases with no outs. Luckily he got a gift from the defense. A line-him-out throw-him-out double play to Nikola Vasic (Southern Illinois) had the Rafters with runners on second and third with two outs. Though Wisconsin Rapids wouldn’t falter. A two out single scored the two runners making it 3-3.

Battle Creek had a shot to break the tie with bases loaded in the sixth with singles from Nick Walker (Austin Peay) and Norkeh followed by a walk by Felix. Vasic would ground one to second base to end the inning. The Rapids Rafters also left two on base with two outs, but failed the score.

Both teams would leave runners on base in the seventh. In extras, Battle Creek got a single from Walker and Felix walked, but with two outs Vasic grounded out again.

The Rafters, on the first pitch by Garam in the eighth, belted a solo walk-off home run to win the game for Wisconsin Rapids 4-3.

Game Two:

It was all Rapids Rafters from start to finish. In the first two innings, the league-leading Rafters scored five runs off five hits off starter Tyler Kirkwood (Delta College). In the third inning, Ashton Knutson (Ridgewater College) allowed two more runs off two hits for an early 7-0 Rafters lead. Battle Creek would follow in the fourth with a run of their own, Hawken scored on an RBI double by Alex Howard (Arkansas State).

Knutson would surrender one run in the fourth and get out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth. Wisconsin Rapids had a 8-1 lead after five innings. The Bombers would send Alec Berry (Elmhurst College) to relieve Knutson, and Berry allowed one run off a hit and a defensive error. Battle Creek entered the final inning down 9-1.

Despite two runners on base, Battle Creek would be retired to end the game.

Battle Creek will have an off day on August 8 for the Major League Dreams Showcase, where Bombers players Nick Walker, Mark Quinby (UC San Diego) and Nahwon Norkeh will play.
