Harmon Killebrew to Open Lunkers Season
(BRAINERD, MN) The Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers announced that Minnesota Twins legend Harmon Killebrew will be on hand to throw out the first pitch when they open their season on Thursday, May 28 at Stewart C. Mills Field. Killebrew will also be the keynote speaker at the Lunkers Home Opener Luncheon presented by Cub Foods taking place at the Legacy on Thursday, May 28 at 11:30 am.
Killebrew played 22 years of professional baseball with the Washington Senators, the Minnesota Twins and the Kansas City Royals. During his career, Killebrew was an 11 time All-Star and won the American League MVP in 1969. Killebrew was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984.
“We have been telling people the last few months that we are going to do things differently at Stewart C. Mills Field. This shows them that we mean what we say,” Lunkers owner Joel Sutherland said. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with Harmon on several occasions and each time I walk away wishing everyone would have the chance to meet him. He’s a baseball legend and simply a very nice man,” Sutherland said
The announcement of Killebrew illustrates that things will have a different feel for baseball fans and families in the lakes area this year.
“We are bringing a new team, a new look and a new spirit to the people of the Lakes Area. We want this to be a team they are proud of and a team they’ll want to follow all summer long,” Sutherland concluded.
