The Badlands Big Sticks (4-5) welcomed the Bismarck Larks (4-7) to town, opening a four-game homestand with the Big Sticks’ eyes set on making up some ground, only being a couple games back of first place.
In a hard-fought battle, the Big Sticks were not able to secure the win, falling 3-2.
Starting pitching for both squads was prominent throughout the night. For the Big Sticks, it was southpaw Nikau Heeney (Skyline (CA) CC) who put up 5 IP, 4.50 ERA, 8 H, 0 K, 2 R, 2.20 WHIP. Along with Tyler Weimer (Arkansas State University) throwing 4.0 IP, 2.25 ERA, 1 H, 2 K, 1 R, 0.25 WHIP.
For the Larks, it was starting pitcher Fernando Diaz putting in six innings of work with a 4.91 ERA, 5 H, 4 K, 2 R, 0.83 WHIP. Bryce Stockton took over in the 7th inning, tossing 2 IP, 4.50 ERA, 1 H, 1 K, 0 R, 0.50 WHIP. Sebastian Edwards cleaned things up in the ninth for the Larks with a couple of strikeouts.
The game went scoreless for four innings before the Larks scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead.
Badlands would respond big time in the home half of the 5th, thanks to a two-run homer from freshman catcher Gavyn Schlotterback (University of Kansas), bringing in Ryker Schow (Brigham Young University) to score, tying the game 2-2.
The game remained 2-2 until the top of the 9th when Larks pinch hitter Jamie Mullin broke through with an RBI double to put Bismarck ahead 3-2, as they would hold on for the win.
Mistakes were costly for the Big Sticks throughout the game as the team finished with three errors on the night, contributing to a couple of the Larks’ runs.
The Big Sticks will look to get back into the win column tonight and avoid getting swept by the Larks.
