HBC Contracting, a general and environmental contracting company based in Lansing and Battle Creek has gone to bat for the eighth year in a row for The Cancer Care Center at Battle Creek Health System (BCHS) and the American Cancer Society (ACS) in a very unique way. Every time a Battle Creek Bomber baseball player hits a homerun at C.O. Brown Stadium, HBC donates $200 to be split between BCHS and ACS.
A long-time supporter of cancer programs, HBC went to bat helping cancer victims through the Bombers. “In addition to our other sponsorships like Relay for Life and ‘Slam Dunk Cancer’ with the BC Knights basketball team, we try to have some fun supporting cancer programs through this sports venue,” says Michael Beck, Battle Creek resident and owner of HBC. “To that end, we decided to partner again with the Bombers and sponsor the ‘Strikeout Cancer’ promotion. It not only recognizes the efforts of the college ballplayers who hit homeruns, but it also helps two local organizations, who are instrumental in helping those facing cancer. This really is a ‘win win.’
Battle Creek Health System, sponsored by two parent organizations–Trinity Health (the fourth largest Catholic health system in the U.S. with 21 hospitals, 9 nursing homes, 19 senior house facilities, 8 home health care agencies, and 4 hospices in Michigan alone) and BCHS Community Partners, is accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Battle Creek Health System, a member of the Mercy Cancer Network, is a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement as designated by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network. BCHS provides excellent health care for the community and promotes wellness for the whole person with access and compassion for all. For the latest medical information, visit the BCHS web site at www.bchealth.com or call the BCHS Marketing Department at (269) 966-8132.
HBC owner Mike Beck wanted to do something special to help those suffering from cancer so he partnered with the Battle Creek Bombers baseball program and is donating $200 for every homerun a Bomber hits in C.O. Brown Stadium this season. Pictured at the check presentation is (L-R) Katie Richlick and Jean Thompson of the American Cancer Society, Bomber mascot Moe Skeeter, Beck, and Taffie Dollaway and Gerrie Baarson representing The Cancer Care Center at Battle Creek Health System. BCHS and ACS each received checks for $1,000 representing the homeruns slugged by the Bombers in 2010.
About The Cancer Care Center
The Cancer Care Center at Battle Creek Health System has been awarded the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons’ Outstanding Achievement Award as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program. This three-year approval ranks BCHS among the best hospitals nationwide. BCHS is the only hospital in Michigan to receive this award more than once.
Approval by the Commission on Cancer is presented only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performances. In order to maintain approval, facilities with approved cancer programs must also undergo an on-site review every three years.
Receiving treatment in a Commission on Cancer-approved program ensures that a patient has access to quality care close to home.
The Cancer Care Center, a member of the Mercy Cancer Network, brings some of the world’s most sophisticated treatments to Southwest Michigan. These cancer programs offer information and comprehensive, state-of-the-art services based upon the latest cancer clinical trials, a multi-disciplinary team approach that coordinates the best treatment options, genetic counseling, life-long patient follow-up through cancer registry, and ongoing monitoring and improvement of care.
Recognizing that traveling to and from treatments can be a major challenge for cancer patients, The Cancer Care Center began a partnership several years ago with the American Cancer Society (ACS) to make transportation more accessible for BCHS patients. It is called Road to Recovery. The ACS’s ‘Cancer Resource Center’ is also located in the lobby of The Cancer Care Center. This service empowers cancer patients through up-to-date, valuable information to help them make decisions that will impact their cancer experience.
