The Bombers are excited to announce the addition of an impressive pedigree to the 2011 squad: Bobby Buckner, son of former MLB All-Star Bill Buckner, will be joining Battle Creek this summer.
“We are really looking forward to bringing Bobby to Battle Creek for the summer. He can play multiple infield positions and is a veteran guy that should bring leadership to the team as well.” said Bombers GM Brian Colopy.
Bobby Buckner: 6’0-190, S/R, 2B/3B, Texas A&M Corpus Christi (Jr., RS), Boise, ID.
In his junior year with Islanders, Buckner is hitting .290 with 10 RBIs. He started his collegiate career at the University of Texas and redshirted, transferred to Navarro Junior College for his freshman season, and moved to Texas A&M Corpus Christi in 2010. He made a splash at A&M last season when he batted in 30 runs.
After playing the 2008 summer with the Anchorage Bucks of the storied Alaska Baseball League, he spent 2009 and 2010 with the recently-defunct San Luis Obispo Rattlers of the California Collegiate League. Northwoods League competition will be the most difficult he’s faced.
“It’s a great situation for our team because not only do we bring in a kid that improves our infield, but it is a name that our community will be excited about seeing play this summer.” said Bombers GM Brian Colopy.
Buckner’s father, Bill, had a successful 20-year major league career which included winning the 1980 National League Batting Title and playing in the 1981 All-Star Game.
The Bombers are set to begin their 5th season on June 1, 2011 in the Prestigious Northwoods League. For tickets, fans can call (269)962-0735 or visit www.BattleCreekBombers.com.
