The Battle Creek Bombers defeated the Rockford Rivets 6-0 Tuesday night at Rivets Stadium. The Bombers split the two-game series with Rockford, and their overall record improved to 15-15.
The Bombers got the scoring going in the fourth inning. Second baseman Christian Helsel led off with a single and then stole second base. Designated hitter Daniel Jipping followed with a single, advancing Helsel to third. After center fielder Dean Miller walked, first baseman Nick Podkul grounded into a double play. Helsel scored, and the Bombers took the 1-0 lead.
The Bombers added to their lead in the fifth inning. Ryan Dorow led off with a single. Right fielder Eric Gilgenbach reached first base on a fielder’s choice. With one out, left fielder Cody Sporrer hit a single. The Rivets committed two errors on the single, which allowed both Gilgenbach and Sporrer to score, giving the Bombers the 3-0 lead.
The Bombers pulled away in the seventh inning. Eric Gilgenbach led off with a walk and then Cody Sporrer hit a single, advancing Gilgenbach to third. Daniel Patzlaff hit a sacrifice bunt, scoring Gilgenbach, giving the Bombers their fourth run of the game. Christian Helsel worked a one-out walk. With Helsel at first and Sporrer at third after a stolen base, the Bombers executed the double steal, allowing Sporrer to score, giving the Bombers the 5-0 lead. After Daniel Jipping popped out, Dean Miller worked a two-out walk. Nick Podkul followed with a single, scoring Helsel, giving the Bombers their sixth and final run of the game.
The Bombers pitchers allowed six hits in the game. Starting pitcher Josh Prater went four scoreless innings. Krystien Johnson-Battilana relieved Prater and went three scoreless innings. Edgar Sanchez came on in the eighth inning and pitched the final two innings for the Bombers.
The Bombers have Wednesday off before heading back to Kenosha for a two-game stint starting Thursday night at 8:05/7:05 Central.
