Kenosha, Wisc. – After little mistakes costed them the win on Tuesday, and an hour and a half rain delay, Battle Creek (11-5) took down the Kenosha Kingfish (10-6) on Wednesday night 5-3 to remain in second place in the South standings.
It all started with Nick Vasic (Southern Illinois) for the Bombers, who hit his second home run of the season, and second against the Kingfish at Simmons Field, to put Battle Creek ahead 2-0.
Jared Middleton (University of West Florida) started for the Bombers, and he threw two scoreless innings to begin the game. An error on Alec Trela (University of Memphis) would give the Kingfish an opportunity to score. A triple to left center by Kenosha would cut the deficit in half in the third. Middleton wouldn’t find himself in any trouble until the fifth inning. A two-out, two-RBI single would give Kenosha a 3-2 lead.
The Bombers, who have faced multiple Kenosha comebacks at Simmons Field, would tie the game 3-3 on a bases loaded walk by Vasic. In the sixth, Jake Hawken (University of Portland) came in relief for Battle Creek, and Kenosha loaded the bases after a single and back-to-back hit by pitches. Hawken managed to get out of the jam, getting the Kingfish to ground out to first.
Battle Creek would then take command in the seventh, with bases loaded and one out, Tom Stoffel (Virginia Tech) doubled to left center to bring around Jake Blunt (Clarke University) and Logan Kaletha (Indiana University) to take a 5-3 lead.
Hawken and Colton Bradley (Central Michigan) got the final six outs of the game for Battle Creek, and Bradley earned his second save of the season.
The Bombers will look forward to a five-game home stand tomorrow (June 15) against the Lakeshore Chinooks starting at 7:05. Voices of the Bombers Neil Doyle and Jake Hromada will have the call on Northwoods League TV and on the Bombers Radio Network.
