Fond du Lac, Wisc. – Fond du Lac (23-28, 7-8) snapped Battle Creek’s (29-21, 9-6) four-game win streak at Herr-Baker Field Saturday night 5-4, putting the Dock Spiders up 3-2 in the season series
The Bombers struck first in the top of the third inning with two outs. Cody Hawken (University of Portland) reached third base on a single by Nick Walker (Austin Peay). JD Mundy (Virginia Tech) continued his recent hot bat with a double to score both runners. Tom Stoffel (Virginia Tech) scored his Hokie teammate with a single of his own making it 3-0 Battle Creek.
The Dock Spiders responded with their next at-bat, starting the bottom half of the third with three-straight singles off Battle Creek starter Tyler Garam (Greensboro College). With no outs, Garam surrendered a sac fly to center for Fon du Lac’s first run of the night. Garam re-loaded the bases with a walk and another sac fly was hit to center to make it 3-2 Battle Creek.
The Bombers’ bats fell silent in the top of the fourth and Fond du Lac took advantage, the Dock Spiders took their first lead and more on the night by scoring three runs off four hits. Garam allowed back-to-back singles to start his inning. A double down the left field line gave the Dock Spiders a 4-3 lead. A single with two outs added one more run, 5-3.
Battle Creek cut their deficit to one run the next inning, Walker and Mundy singled with one out. Nikola Vasic (Southern Illinois) scorched a two out single to bring in Walker and put runners on second and third. The Bombers couldn’t keep the rally alive and trailed 5-4.
Battle Creek’s relievers Alex Smith (University of Memphis) and T.J. Shook (Oakland University) held Fond du Lac scoreless in the last three innings. The Bombers fell flat offensively without a hit in the final four innings
The Bombers and Fond du Lac will battle again at Herr-Baker Field with a 7:35 ET first pitch. Battle Creek will throw Taylor Horn (Wayne State). Fans can catch the action on the Bombers Radio Network with Neil Doyle and Jake Hromada ten minutes prior to first pitch.
