Mequon, Wisc. – Battle Creek (41-28, 21-13) has won three straight after a double header sweep tonight at the Lakeshore Chinooks (37-32, 19-15). With a win today, Battle Creek has secured a spot in the 2017 Northwoods League Playoffs, and need a win and a Rockford loss tomorrow to clinch a home playoff game.
Game One: Start in June, Finish it in August
Before the rain delay back on June 22, Battle Creek’s Tom Stoffel (Virginia Tech) doubled to score Alex Howard (Arkansas State). Stoffel doubled again with bases loaded in the second inning to score three more runs, making it 5-0. Then Mother Nature interfered.
Battle Creek resumed the game with a 5-0 advantage on Lakeshore in the bottom of the fourth. With a runner on first, Aaron Antonini (Middle Tennessee State) started the game with a full count, in which the Lakeshore starter walked Antonini and Storm Joop (University of Indianapolis) to load the bases.
Alex Howard (Arkansas State) worked a walk to give Battle Creek a 6-0 lead. Stoffel sacrificed himself to left center to bring in the second run of the day for BC. Lakeshore was dug into a 7-0 deficit to start the day.
Andrew Click (Davenport University) started the game back in June, so he continued his start from over a month ago. Click allowed two hits but both Chinooks were stranded. In the fifth inning, the game was delayed 45 minutes from a rain delay.
Battle Creek scratched one run right after the delay. Joop singled to score Cody Hawken (University of Portland) to make the BC lead 8-0. The Bombers offense would strike again in the seventh, Joop’s RBI single scored Aaron Antonini for a 9-0 lead on Lakeshore. The Chinooks would get on the board in the bottom of the seventh with three hits and one Battle Creek error, cutting the deficit to 9-1.
Andrew Click would sit down Lakeshore the rest of the way, producing one of his best starts of the summer. Click earned his fourth win of the summer with his nine IP, nine hits, one earned run, three walks and eight strikeout performance.
Game 2: Bombers Sneak Game 2 for Sweep
Battle Creek struck first in the second game with four hits and a run scored. Tom Stoffel (Virginia Tech) and Nick Walker (Austin Peay) singled to start the game. On a Nehwon Norkeh (Tennessee Wesleyan) single, Stoffel tried to score but was thrown out at the plate. Walker did score safely with a Storm Joop (University of Indianapolis) line drive single.
Lakeshore would tie the game in the home half of the second inning off three hits. Battle Creek starter Zach Karbowski (Kellogg Community College) got the first two outs of the inning, but allowed a walk and back-to-back singles to tie the game.
Nikola Vasic (Southern Illinois) broke the tie in the top of the fourth. Joop singled to begin the inning, and moved over on a bad pickoff move from the Lakeshore pitcher. Vasic hit one to right to take a 2-1 lead for Battle Creek.
In the bottom of the seventh still down 2-1, the Chinooks got the tying run on board with a leadoff single. A sac bunt attempt failed after Justin Felix (Arkansas State) fielded the bunt in front of the plate and got the lead runner at second. Down to their final out and a runner on first, a pass ball at the plate moved the runner over to second. Then Lakeshore hit a liner up the middle to score the tying run 2-2.
In extras, with one out, Battle Creek’s Walker and Norkeh singled. Joop followed them by working a walk to load the bases for Vasic. Vasic, with nineteen family members in attendance, bloop singled to right center to take a 3-2 BC lead. Felix followed with a sac fly RBI of his own to score Norkeh to give Quinby insurance in the bottom of the eighth 4-2.
An error on Battle Creek and a walk surrendered by Quinby put the tying runs on base, but Quinby would record back-to-back strikeouts to seal the deal.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
The Longest Start of the Year…
- Click threw his first complete game of the season, and it took him well over a month to finish what he started. The Portland, Michigan native tied his season-high eight strikeouts, which he has done in back-to-back starts, and only allowed one run.
- Click has compiled his best two starts of the summer in his last two outings, throwing 16 innings, allowing just two runs (both unearned), striking out sixteen and only walking five.
Youngster’s Got Game
- Karbowski pitched much comfortably tonight than his previous three outings, he threw a season-high six innings and only allowed one run.
It’s Still Storming Out
- Joop went 4-7 with two walks, three RBI and two runs scored in the double header. The Champaign, Illinois native has recorded a hit in four of his five games since he’s returned to Battle Creek (6-17, .353).
The Wisconsin Boy
- Vasic, in front of his family, went 4-8 in the double header with two RBI, including a clutch hit with bases loaded in extras to give Battle Creek back the lead. The New Berlin, Wisconsin native is 5-13 (.385) in his last three games after only recording one hit in his first five games in August.
You Picked Up Where You Left Off
- Stoffel had two doubles and four RBIs before the first game was called in June, he recorded five total RBIs in game one and went 2-4 in game two. The Dayton, Ohio native has 22 multi-hit games this summer.
