Alec Cargin and Zach Gartner will represent Battle Creek at the 2018 Northwoods League All-Star Game in Kalamazoo, Michigan on July 24.
Cargin will be one of two catchers on the roster for the South Division. The Wofford Terrier currently leads all catchers in the South with a .319 batting average and nine doubles. His 15 RBIs rank fifth among all Bombers this summer.
Cargin’s best stretch of the season came from June 10 – June 16, when he hit .481 with five doubles, a triple and six RBI’s in a seven-game stretch. Four of his nine multi-hit games came over that stretch as well.
“Making the All-Star team is a big honor for me because I know how good of a league this is, and how many talented players there are in every lineup,” said Cargin. “Just knowing all the great players that have come through this league and had success, it means a lot to be selected.”
Manager, Josh Rebandt, praised Cargin’s approach at the plate. “AC has been consistent all year. He’s done a really nice job for us,” said Rebandt. “The one thing about him is I haven’t seen him give up an at-bat yet this summer, and that’s one thing that has really stood out for him and why I think he’s had a lot of success.”
Gartner will be one of five outfielders on the Southern Division roster in the Midsummer Classic. The junior from East Texas Baptist is second among outfielders in the South with a .325 batting average, ranking 12th in the entire league.
Gartner’s 16 multi-hit games ranks first on Battle Creek. His 25 RBIs leads the Bombers and ranks 12th in the league.
“It’s an honor to be named one of the top outfielders in this league because I know how many talented players there are,” said Gartner. “You hear about how good the Northwoods League is and just to be recognized is pretty cool.”
Rebandt also knew Gartner was very deserving after a slow start. “He’s really turned it on and that’s a credit to him. He’s done a nice job at keeping a level head, and now he’s been a consistent .300 hitter for a while now,” said Rebandt.
The All-Star game festivities will take place from July 23 – July 25th at Homer Stryker Field down I-94 in Kalamazoo. The game is set for Tuesday, July 24 at 7:30 EST.
