Battle Creek, Mich. – Two freshmen hailing from the number four recruiting class in the nation at the University of Miami will be joining the Bombers for the 2014 season. The team has announced the signings of Johnny Ruiz and Sebastian Diaz to their roster for the upcoming season.
Out of the national powerhouse school in Florida, Westminster Christian, Johnny Ruiz was a standout as a middle infielder. Ruiz, a lefty at the plate, had an average of .564 with 5 homeruns and 40 RBIs in his senior year. Those numbers led to Johnny racking up all-state honors while being named team MVP. His junior year he also earned First-Team All-Dade honors while hitting .505.
“Johnny will play a key role for us this summer. He brings some very impressive accolades to Battle Creek. He will go out night in and night out and help you win with a great assortment of tools,” added Bombers Head Coach Dan Trivett.
Sebastian Diaz, a Southwest Ranches, Florida native, is a versatile athlete that can be effective in a number of positions. The 6’1” freshman was highly recruited out of University High School, a Florida powerhouse. He has accolades that include Second-Team All-Broward his junior season and garnered All-Broward Honorable Mention in 2011 and 2012.
Trivett adds about Diaz, “(He) has all the accolades to match his tool set. Diaz is a player that got a lot of national attention out of school because he can really play a high caliber of baseball.” Trivett says about the Miami duo, “Coming to Battle Creek from ‘the U’ is two of the finest freshman college baseball players in America. We are honored to have them.”
Catch Johnny Ruiz, Sebastian Diaz, and company this summer in Battle Creek as they compete to capture a Northwoods League championship. Opening day for the Bombers is scheduled for May 29th at 7:05pm against the rival Kalamazoo Growlers.
