By: Pat Mullen Battle Creek, Mich.- The Bombers had a good start from Kyle Slack tonight, and when he got in trouble the offense rallied behind him to get the win on a beautiful Friday night. Slack had the lead entering the fifth inning, but gave up four earned runs and could not make it out of the top half. The offense made it happen in the seventh as they plated four and regained the lead, going on to win 7-4. “When a guy like Kyle Slack is on the mound and basically throws a quality start every time, it takes a lot of pressure off the defense and I can concentrate more on offense like today,” Henri Lartigue (Ole Miss). Lartigue, whose family come into town all the way from Southaven, MS, showed his skills on the perfect night. He was great behind the dish and at the plate, going 2-4 with a walk, RBI and a run scored. Dillion Engle (Chicago State) entered to try and get out of Slack’s jam, but was unable to do so. Engle has been solid all year, but got into some trouble tonight. Luckily for Engle and the Bombers, Dan Martinson (Richmond) was there to get it done in late relief. “It is a nice role to be in and nice to have them (the bullpen guys) behind me to pick me up later,” Martinson said. “I like coming into jams, I know I can throw strikes and get ground balls for the team.” The Bombers were able to scatter a run in the first, second and third inning, then went silent. The bats came back to life in the seventh after a leadoff single from Jared Foster (LSU). From there, the Bombsquad would bat around and plate four runs. Martinson, in line for the win, handed the ball to Josh Leone (UL-Monroe) in the ninth. Leone was able to do his job, though it was a scare as two Kingfish hit the ball deep to right and center field, respectively. He was able to get the save and seal the win for Battle Creek. The Bombers stay at home with a two game series beginning tomorrow verse the La Crosse Loggers, 7:05 first pitch.
