ROCKFORD, IL — The Battle Jacks drop to .500 on Sunday in an 11-4 win for the Rivets in the first of two games from Rockford.
Inning number one saw the Rivets get a hot start, beginning with leadoff hitter Jackson Forbes’ double to put a runner on base early. A Thomas Cooper error allowed Forbes to score, beginning a series of runs for Rockford. A wild pitch along with hits from Davis Collie and Jack Scheri put the Battle Jacks in an early 4-0 hole.
The second inning didn’t go much better for the Battle Jacks. Keith Eusebio’s triple set him up to score on Jackson Forbes’ single, and Forbes would later score on a double play to give Rockford a 6-0 lead.
The Battle Jacks would get bases loaded in the top of the third, but Rockford was able to escape and get away with no runs allowed – the Rivets would fire back in the bottom of the inning, and an errant throw from starting pitcher Jackson Phelps on a steal attempt would allow Bryce Nevils to score. The Rivets led 7-0 exiting the third inning.
Bryce Nevils made a splash again in the fourth inning for Rockford after a single down the left field line drove in Colin McCormick and Caleb Rhodes.
The top of the fifth is where Battle Creek finally saw some momentum, picking up four runs – Sonnier Moses crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice from Hunter Morgan, followed by a run driven in by a walk, and then a two-run double from Owen Larrigan.
The Rivets struck back in the bottom of the inning when Keith Eusebio launched the first home run of the season against Battle Creek over the left field wall. A wild pitch would also send Caleb Rhodes across home plate, and the Rivets would lead 11-4 after five.
The Battle Jacks would show some fight in the 9th inning with a Hunter Morgan run, driven in off an error. Abraham Maurer would also drive in AJ Lucas off of a single into left field. Those two runs would be the last the Battle Jacks put on the board after a flyout into centerfield by Noah Hogan would end the game, 11-6.
The Battle Jacks end the day with 9 hits and 3 errors.
The Jacks will see a rematch tomorrow night to close out the set with a 7:35 P.M. ET first pitch in Rockford.
