RICHMOND, IN — The Battle Creek Battle Jacks were not able to overcome an early deficit, losing 5-1 to the Richmond Flying Mummies at Historic McBride Stadium
The Flying Mummies wasted little time taking control of the game, scoring three runs in the opening inning. RBI hits from Ashton Seymore and Eli Bennett highlighted the frame as Richmond jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage.
Following the first inning, both teams settled in defensively as pitching took center stage. The Battle Jacks struggled to generate offence, while their own pitchers kept the game within reach by limiting further damage through the middle innings.
The game remained 3-0 until the fifth inning, when the Flying Mummies took a commanding lead. Richmond scored two more runs in the bottom half of the frame to extend its lead to 5-0.
The Battle Jacks showed some life in the sixth inning, breaking through for their only run of the contest. Thomas Cooper drove in Brendan Thompson on a putout, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
The Flying Mummies later added to their total scoring four runs in the eighth inning, shutting down any chance of a comeback from the Battle Jacks as they led 9-1 heading into the ninth.
The Battle Jacks finished the night searching for answers at the plate after being held to one run and will look to bounce back in the series finale on Tuesday.
With the loss, Battle Creek has dropped seven of its last eight games. The Battle Jacks will wrap up their two-game set against Richmond before continuing their road trip with a three-game series against the Traverse City Pit Spitters. Following the trip, Battle Creek will return home for a five-game homestand.
