ROYAL OAK, MI — The Battle Creek Battle Jacks lost their fifth game in a row, slipping to the bottom of the Northwoods League Great Lakes East division, in an extra-innings 13-12 loss to the Royal Oak Luperchans on Sunday.

The bats got going early and often for both teams on Sunday, as the Battle Jacks got out to an early 2-0 lead in the third inning, as an RBI single from Payton Bookwalter opened the scoring, before Thomas Cooper scored Bookwalter by a sacrifice fly.

The lead did not last long for the Battle Jacks as the Luperchans scored six in the bottom half of the inning, to take a 6-2 lead heading into the fourth inning.

The Battle Jacks then responded with three runs of their own off RBI’s from Sonnier Moses, Christian Lopez, and Brendan Thompson to cut the lead down to one.

The fifth inning saw the Battle Jacks tie the game 5-5, before the Luperchans exploded for offence, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 10-6 lead.

Bookwalter’s three RBI home run to right field pulled the deficit for the Battle Jacks to just one, with momentum swinging in their direction.

The seventh inning saw the Battle Jacks take their first lead of the contest since the third inning, as back-to-back three-run innings gave Battle Creek a 12-10 lead.

However, the Luperchans responded in the eighth and ninth inning scoring one run each to tie the game, sending it to extra innings for the second time this week.

The Luperchans did not take long in extras to win the game as an RBI putout from Mateo Noto scored Michael Zielinski.

The Battle Jacks are back in action on Monday against the Royal Oak Luperchans, as they open a three game homestand before entering what can be seen as a much-needed All-Star break.
