KALAMAZOO, MI — The Battle Creek Battle Jacks played the first of a 4-game series against the Kalamazoo Growlers Sunday, pushing 12 runs through in the last 5 innings combined for the win.

The first four innings only saw 2 total runs, both for the Growlers in the 2nd inning. Brandon DeGoti drove in the 2nd run after Chase Thomas scored on a wild pitch to set the Jacks back early.

It was the 5th inning where Battle Creek finally took the egg off the board, with a run sent in on a Christian Lopez sacrifice fly. The Battle Jacks then took the lead in the 6th by scoring 5 runs, kicked off by an AJ Lucas solo-shot home run to tie up the game. Jonny Marquez and Kyle Hartmann would each have an RBI as well, while Dayne Wimberly would score off a wild pitch and a hit-by-pitch would push in Marquez.

Battle Creek continued to hold off the Growlers, with new second-half pitchers Matt Murphy and Luke Soper each seeing action on the mount to shut down Kalamazoo for the rest of the game. The Jacks scored in each inning for the rest of the game, and ended the day with 13 hits to the Growlers’ 6. BC had no defensive errors.

The Battle Jacks will continue their series with the Growlers on Monday, back in Kalamazoo for a 6:35 P.M. ET first pitch at Homer Stryker Field.
