BATTLE CREEK, MI — The Battle Creek Battle Jacks played a hard-fought matchup against the Kalamazoo Growlers on Sunday during Russell’s fifth birthday; however, they ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard as they lost 9-5.
The Battle Jacks got off to an ideal start, taking an early 1-0 lead, while adding pressure to the Growlers’ starting pitcher, Gavin Jones, as he walked in Marcus Dierks for the first run of the ball game.
The Growlers then took the lead in the third inning of the contest, taking a 2-1 lead, which they never looked back from.
Battle Creek then evened the game in the bottom half of the third inning as Marcus Dierks stole home for the tying run.
Kalamazoo stormed back in the fourth inning, scoring one run off a Logan Tribble RBI single to center field as the Growlers led 3-2 heading into the fifth inning.
The fifth inning saw the Growlers explode for offence, widening the lead to five after a four-run inning, highlighted by RBI’s from Henry McDonald, Isaac Vanderwoude, and Logan Tribble, who added his second RBI of the game.
The Battle Jacks did not give up from there as they added a run in the latter half of the inning, but it wasn’t enough as they trailed 7-3 with just three games remaining in the contest.
The Growlers added an insurance run in the seventh, before the Battle Jacks showed some life scoring two runs in the inning to narrow the lead down to 8-5.
A home run in the ninth inning from the Growlers proved to much to handle for the Battle Jacks as they trailed by four with just three outs remaining.
The Battle Jacks are back in action on Monday with first pitch scheduled for 9:05 am, as they face-off against they close out their series with the Kalamazoo Growlers, as Battle Creek celebrates third shift workers. MCCU later and Let’s Go Battle Jacks!
