Burritos proved to be the tastier food Thursday night.
The Battle Creek Burritos downed their Northwoods rival the Kalamazoo Corn Dogs 6-3 at C.O. Brown Stadium for their second win of the season.
The first of two Food Fights, Kalamazoo (2-1) started the game with bases loaded, no outs and failed to score. Battle Creek starter Dylan Givens (John A. Logan) squeaked out of the jam.
The Burritos (2-1) came alive early in the second inning. In his first at bat of the summer, Winston Welch (Arkansas State) cracked an RBI double to score Tom Stoffel (Virginia Tech) to take an early 1-0 lead. The Burritos would score two more runs off three consecutive singles. Cale Henneman (University of Memphis) and Nick Vasic (McHenry County) both reeled in RBIs to make it a 3-0 Battle Creek lead.
Givens worked six shutout innings before the Corn Dogs scored two runs off Jason Sullivan’s third RBI of the year and Nick Hutchins’ sac fly. Reliever T.J. Shook (Oakland University) walked and struck out a batter to end the seventh and keep a Battle Creek 3-2 lead.
Needing insurance runs in the seventh, Battle Creek pounced on Kalamazoo reliever Walter Talcott, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Nick Walker (Austin Peay) scored Vasic on an RBI double, while Cody Hawken (University of Portland) slugged a line drive off the right field wall and busted around the bases for an inside the park home run. Hawken’s wheels gave Battle Creek a 6-2 lead.
The Corn Dogs responded in the eighth with a two out RBI single off Shook, cutting their deficit to 6-3. Battle Creek would silence Kalamazoo in the eight and ninth innings thanks to Horn and closer Tucker Mai (Clarke University), who registered his first save of the year.
The Burritos will return to being the Bombers tomorrow and will visit Kalamazoo for their first road game of the season at 7:05. Jared Middleton (West Florida University) is slated to be on the mound for Battle Creek. Fans can tune in to the Battle Creek Bombers Radio Network, where Neil Doyle and Jake Hromada will have the call starting at 6:55.
