Mallards sign white-hot St. Mary’s standout freshman Troy Channing

Madison, WI – March 24, 2009. The Mallards are excited to announce the team has signed St. Mary’s freshman infielder Troy Channing for the 2009 season. Two weeks ago the former Foothill High School (Pleasanton, CA) product was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for a second time after hitting .550 with two doubles, two home runs, and 12 RBIs. In a game against No. 25 UC Santa Barbara’s All-American left-handed pitcher Mario Hollands, Channing went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in. He also hit his fifth home run of the season. Channing currently leads the Gaels in batting average (.449), hits (40), home runs (9), RBIs (36), and slugging percentage (.809) through only 23 games. Last June he was selected in the 40th round of the MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners.

As a senior at Foothill he was named First Team All-East Bay, First Team All-League, and team MVP following a monster year during which he hit .475 with 28 runs scored and 25 RBIs. He also hit a school single-season record seven home runs.

Channing plans on majoring in Communications and his post graduate plans include a desire to continue his baseball career or pursue a job in advertising.
