Trio Headed to Battle Creek

(BATTLE CREEK, MI) The Battle Creek Bombers announced the signings of three position players to their 2009 roster. Joe Van Meter and Doug Otto, infielders and teammates from Virginia Commonwealth University, will join outfielder Nick Campbell from Bryant University in Battle Creek this summer.

Van Meter, 6’3” and 200 pounds, is a sophomore infielder and part-time pitcher for the VCU Rams this spring. The native of Oyster Bay, NY is among the Rams leaders in several offensive categories including games (36), hitting (.343), hits (47), at bats (137), doubles (12), and on-base percentage (.415). He has also made two appearances out of the Rams bullpen, working 3 innings and striking out 6.

Otto, a junior shortstop who hails from Jefferson City, MO, is batting .326 in 36 games for the Rams and has nine doubles and 23 RBI. The 6’1”, 185 lb. Otto was a NJCAA Division I All-American selection and Rawlings Gold Glove winner at Johnson County Community College in 2008.

Campbell is also enjoying a fine season for the Bryant Bulldogs (Division 1, Smithfield, RI). The junior centerfielder is hitting .356 in 42 games and leads the team in hits (64) and is third in doubles (10). Campbell, who hails from Raynham, MA, is also a Gold Glove winner and a three-year starter under former Bombers skipper and current Bulldogs assistant coach Brian Murphy.

“Joe Van Meter (VCU), Doug Otto (VCU), and Nick Campbell (Bryant) fit the mold of experienced players with proven backgrounds,” said Bombers field manager Tom Fleenor. “Joe and Doug are enjoying great seasons and Nick is doing what he has done his entire college career…hit. We can only hope that they continue that trend in Battle Creek this summer.”
