CATS ROSTER GROWS TO 25

The Thunder Bay Border Cats of the Northwoods League announced today the signing of four more players for the 2009 season.  Joining the Cats are pitcher Matt Dwyer, outfielder Garrett Houts, first baseman/pitcher Colin Bear, and third baseman/pitcher A.J. Schugel.   

Dwyer is a 5’10, 170 pound lefthander from Stoughton, WI.  The southpaw is in his junior season at Ripon College in Wisconsin.  Dwyer has made eight starts for the Red Hawks this year and is 4-0 with a 1.96 earned run average.  He has racked up 46 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched. 

Houts is a freshman outfielder from the University of Southern California.  The native of Fort Collins, CO has played in 31 games this season for the Trojans.  The 6’0, 180 pound right-handed batter is hitting .240 with one home run and six runs batted in.  

Bear is a 6’3, 205 pounder from Houston, TX.  He is currently a freshman at Northwestern State University in Louisiana. In 29 games at the plate this season, Bear is batting .295 with two home runs and 15 RBI’s.  He has also pitched in 10 games for the Demons including four starts.  The lefthander has a 1-4 record with a 6.49 ERA. 

Schugel is a 6’1, 180 pound  freshman at Central Arizona College in Coolidge, AZ.  In 45 games this year, Schugel is hitting .244 and has knocked in 12 runs.  On the mound, the righthander from Highlands Ranch, CO has pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts in three relief appearances.

The Border Cats open the 2009 Northwoods League season two weeks from tonight, Thursday, May 28, in Lacrosse against the Loggers.  The Cats home opener is Wednesday, June 3, at Port Arthur Stadium versus the Green Bay Bullfrogs at 7:05 p.m.
