Local flavor: Mallards sign two from nearby MATC

Madison, WI – May 16, 2009.

Joining already-signed Wisconsin-native Kurtis Muller (Iowa) this season for the Mallards are state products Chris Barker (OF) and Cody Winiarski (RHP), both from nearby MATC. Barker and Winiarksi are in action today as the Wolfpack host the North Plains District Tournament at Robin Roberts Field. Their full biographies are written below.

Chris Barker, So., OF, MATC. A native of Racine, Wis., Barker hit .315 with 20 RBIs and 14 stolen bases two years ago as a freshman (last season he medical redshirted). In 2008 he was named MATC Male Sportsperson of the Year after receiving All-Conference Academic honors.  As of May 14 the sophomore outfielder was hitting a team-best .409 (52-for-127) with 8 doubles and 27 RBIs. He also has 19 stolen bases in 27 attempts for the year.

Cody Winiarski, So., RHP, MATC. Last season as a freshman Winiarski led the Wolfpack with 58.2 innings pitched while posting a 6-2 record and 3.53 ERA. He also pitched a perfect game on April 3, 2008 versus Highland Community College. As of May 14 the Wisconsin Rapids-native led the team in innings pitched (51), wins (6), and appearances (13), en route to a miniscule 1.94 ERA. He was recently named the 2009 MATC Male Sportsperson of the Year, a year after teammate Barker received the same award.
