Battle Creek 3 – Brainerd 1

The Battle Creek Bombers defeated the Brainerd Lunkers in yet another defensive struggle, the final score 3-1. Joe Wagstaff (Louisburg College) had a dominant pitching performance, only facing 1 more than the minimum number of batters through 6 innings. Joe ended the night giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits in 7 plus innings of work.
The game was scoreless through 4 innings, but in the 5th the Bombers took advantage of a hit batsman and used small-ball to take the lead. In the 6th the offense began to click, and back-to-back doubles by Josh Valle (Marshall) and Chas Anthony (Erskine College) scored 2 more runs for the Bombers. Hits were hard to come by against Brainerd starter Joe Van Cleave (Santa Rosa J.C), but the offense was able to provide enough support for Wagstaff to earn his 2nd win of the season. It was the Bombers’ 5th consecutive home victory, while the Lunkers have lost 5 in a row. Chris Lewis (Western Michigan) continued his hot start to the season with another single tonight, making it 10 consecutive games with a hit.

Madison 6 – St. Cloud 4

Riggins’ 2-run shot, his third of the year, and Sabourin’s solo blast broke a 3-3 tie and carried the Mallards to a 6-4 win over St. Cloud at the “Duck Pond” on Saturday night. Madison (8-2) swept its 6-game homestand and stretched its win streak to seven games while moving within a half game of South Division leader Eau Claire, who was postponed in its game with Green Bay due to rain. Madison starter Matt Morgan (Purdue) gave up three runs on five hits, striking out six over 5.1 innings. Brandon Wikoff (Illinois) and second baseman Joe De Pinto (USC) turned four twin killings in all. Joe Yermal (Charlotte) came on in relief of Morgan and fired 2/3 of an inning to get the win. Kyle Heim (Iowa) faced five batters in the ninth to get his first save of the season.
