Even though Opening Day 2010 for Northwoods Leagers isn’t until June second, some of them are already making waves in the baseball world. With the college season well underway, more than a few of the recent NWL signings are raising eyebrows (and opposing pitchers ERAs in some cases).

Leading the charge so far is Eduardo Gonzalez, recently signed by the Willmar Stingers. Gonzalez is leading his college team, Alcorn State, with a .411 batting average. Close behind him are Paul Hoenecke of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and the Green Bay Bullfrogs (.373  batting average, 10 RBI), Will Fadness of South Mountain CC/Eau Claire Express (.356 batting average, 10 RBI), Andrew Haake of the U of Nebraska Kearney/Willmar (.323 with three homers), and Joel Hutter of Des Moines Area CC/Green Bay (.324, one home run, 14 RBI).

On the pitching side of things, Pulama Silva has been nothing short of dominant so far for Yavapai College. Silva, who will play for Eau Claire this summer, has struck out 48 in 29 innings, and has an ERA of 0.93. Other notables are Arik Sikula of Marshall/Rochester, currently 3-2 with a 3.12 ERA, and Michael Wacha of Texas A&M/Madison, who has 41 strikeouts to go with 3 wins and a 1.38 ERA.
