With the season just over one week away, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters added depth and flexibility to their 2011 roster with the signing of LSU sophomore Alex Edward.

A talented hitter who can split time in the outfield and at first-base, Edward followed a break-out freshman spring in Baton Rouge with impressive 2011 numbers. The 6-foot-2, right handed hitter posted a .279 average over 129 at bats this past spring.  Edward proved an effective run producer in the bottom third of the Tigers line-up with 27 RBI.

Edward began his career at LSU coming off the bench, but late last season, grabbed a starting spot and closed out the season strong. During LSU’s 2010 post-season run Edward notched ten hits and a home run.

Edward is no stranger to summer collegiate baseball as he played for the Danville (Illinois) Dans of the Prospect League in the summer of 2010. In 43 games for the Dans, Edward batted .304 and collected seven doubles, four triples, two home runs and 19 RBI.

A Louisiana native, Edward was astandout on the diamond during his high school career. He was named Louisiana 3-A All-State, All-Metro, and All-District in 2008 and 2009 as well as being named 1st team Louisville Slugger All-American both years. As a senior in 2009, he hit .460 with 12 home runs and as a junior he posted a .512 batting average with 8 homers.
