Alexandria’s Kevin Vangheluwe (Michigan) [pronounced van-GAL-a-way] couldn’t have pitched any better than he did in relief on Tuesday night. The 6-foot 4-inch junior right-hander tossed 3 2/3 hitless innings of relief while striking out two and earning the win in the Beetles’ 4-3 extra innings victory over Mankato. The first batter he faced in the 7th reached on an error, which led to an unearned run, but no one got on base in the 8th, 9th, or 10th innings. The third-year Beetle helped his squad win their first playoff game since 2003. Vangheluwe led the Northwoods League with eight wins during the regular season.
