Rochester, MN (May 29th, 2013)– Wednesday night marked the opening of the 2013 season in the Northwoods League, and the night was not short on excitement.

The night’s action included a 1-0, 10-inning win for the Battle Creek Bombers as well as an 11-run outburst for the Rochester Honkers.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature made headlines Wednesday as one game (St. Cloud vs. Waterloo) was postponed and two others  (Green Bay vs. Wisconsin and Lakeshore vs. Wisconsin Rapids) were suspended.

Battle Creek 1, La Crosse 0

Five pitchers combined to yield zero earned runs in 10 innings of play as the Bombers emerged victorious. Cam Gibson (Michigan State) came across to score the winning run in the 10th. Game two of the series is scheduled to begin at 7:05 in Battle Creek on Thursday.

Willmar 7, Thunder Bay 1

Kyle Perry (Monmouth) and Marc Flores (Hawaii) combined for six hits, two homers, and drove in all seven of Willmar’s runs in support of Steven Brault (Regis), who surrendered only two hits and zero runs in six innings of work. Game two of the series is slated for Thursday at 7:05 in Willmar.

Duluth 9, Alexandria 4

The Huskies scored twice in the top of the 6th to break a 4-4 tie and never looked back. Aaron Hernandez (Kansas) plated three runs and scored twice in the win. The series will continue Thursday at 7:05 in Alexandria.

Madison 4, Eau Claire 2 (F/7)

The Mallards won their first outing of the season behind a strong start from Greg Welsh (Penn State), who tossed 5.1 innings surrendering only one earned run and no walks while striking out six. The second game of the set is scheduled for 7:05 in Madison on Thursday.

Rochester 11, Mankato 4

The Honkers pounded out 12 hits and scored eight unearned runs. Mitch Anderson led the charge with three hits. Game two of the series will be played at 7:05 in Rochester.

Lakeshore vs. Wisconsin Rapids- Suspended (Rain/2)

The game will be made up on June 8th, picking up where tonight’s action left off. The next game in the set will begin at 6:35 at Kapko park on Thursday.

St. Cloud vs. Waterloo- Postponed (Rain)

This game will be made up as part of a double header beginning at 6:05 in Waterloo. Tickets from Wednesday’s game will be good for Thursday’s events.

Green Bay vs, Wisconsin- Suspended (Rain/3)

This game will be resumed on June 11th as part of a double header. The start time has not yet been determined. Thursday’s game will start at 6:35 in Green Bay.
