Rochester, Minn (July 28th, 2013)–Sunday was another great day for home teams in the Northwoods League. Of the seven games played, six were won by the home team. This makes the second consecutive day with this kind of success as 13 of the last 15 games in the Northwoods have been won by the team with home field.

Sunday also served as an interleague day as teams from the North faced teams from the South. This included a match up of the two division leaders in Mequon. The Lakeshore Chinooks beat the Waterloo Bucks by a score of 12-4 to take the battle of leaders.

In Battle Creek, the Rochester Honkers got to experience extra innings in the Eastern time zone as they traveled to Battle Creek. In the bottom of the 12th inning, the Bombers pushed across the winning run after they had tied the game in the bottom of the ninth.

St. Cloud 13, Wisconsin Rapids 5

The St. Cloud Rox pulled away on Sunday with a big fifth inning. They pushed across six runs in the frame as it propelled their offensive effort. Blake Headley (Nebraska) led the way for the Rox has he collected four hits, two home runs, three runs, and six RBI out of the number nine spot in the order.

Madison 4, Mankato 2

The Mallards used a decisive sixth inning to grab a win on Sunday. The inning was all Andrew Arenson (Carthage College) would need on the mound. Arenson worked around six walks to allow just one run on one hit through five innings. Madison’s pitching staff managed to strike out 11 batters and record just four hits.

Wisconsin 4, Thunder Bay 2

The Woodchucks grabbed a win in their interleague match up on Sunday against the Thunder Bay Border Cats. Adam Kramer (St. Paul-Concordia) made the start for Wisconsin and turned in a solid outing. Kramer went six innings and allowed just one run on five hits while striking out six.

Lakeshore 12, Waterloo 4

The Chinooks won this battle of the first place teams on Sunday. They exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to get ahead early and cruise to the win. Mike Hollenbeck (Illinois State) had a big night as he went 3.5 at the plate with four RBI and three runs scored.

La Crosse 7, Alexandria 3

Derek Gordon (Park) did not allow an earned run over six innings while picking up the win. Gordon struck out seven batters while walking just one hitter. Nick Day (Iowa) drove in four runs on offense while contributing his second home run on the season.

Eau Claire 6, Duluth 3

The Express offense turned in another solid game on Sunday as eight of the nine hitters recorded hits. The unit was led by Jose Vizcaino, Jr. (Santa Clara) who went 2/5 at the plate with his third home run ont he season and three RBI. The Express bullpen was a bit shaky, but it didn’t allow a run as it shut the door on the Huskies.

Battle Creek 6, Rochester 5 (F/12)

The Honkers made the long trip out to Battle Creek for Sunday’s game, but they came out empty handed. The Bombers tied the game in the bottom of the ninth and proceeded to push across the winning run in the 12th as Drew Carlile (Kellogg CC) crossed the plate.

Willmar 8 vs. Green Bay 8 – Postponed (Rain)

This game will will be made up on July 30th at 4:05.

Monday Schedule:

There are no regularly scheduled games on Monday. The Northwoods League Big League Dreams Showcase will take place in Madison. Four teams of the top prospects in the league will play a doubleheader. The first game will start at 4:05 and will be followed by a second game at 7:05.
