Rochester, Minn (August 13th, 2013)–After winning a league-record 51 games in the regular season, the Waterloo Bucks have already been eliminated from the Northwoods League playoffs. The Duluth Huskies beat the Bucks by a score of 2-1 to win the series 2-0 and advance to the Summer Collegiate World Series.
Meanwhile, the Madison Mallards exploded in the bottom of the eighth to run away from the Lakeshore Chinooks and force a game three in the south. The win forces the series back to Mequon on Wednesday night.
Duluth 2, Waterloo 1
After struggling a lot in the regular season, Jake Heissler (Central Missouri) came up huge in Tuesday night’s win in Waterloo. Heissler pitched seven innings and allowed four hits and one run while beating the Bucks. Michael Suiter (Kansas) drove in the decisive run with a single in the top of the sixth.
The loss puts an end to Waterloo’s season. After a historic 51-win regular season, the Bucks’ offense simply could not get going against the Huskies. After going down 2-1 through seven innings, the Bucks could only muster one base runner while striking out three times in the final two innings.
Madison 14, Lakeshore 8
Through four innings, the Lakeshore Chinooks held a 7-6 lead over the Madison Mallards. From that point on, Madison ran the show as they forced a game three in the series. The Mallards scored three runs in the seventh and five more in the eighth to run away with the victory.
Kyle Ruchim (Northwestern) drove in an incredible six runs while hitting a pair of home runs in the win for Madison. Ruchim also added a double as all three of his hits went for extra bases. Joe McCarthy (Virginia) joined Ruchim by hitting a pair of doubles and driving in three runs on his own.
