Rochester, Minn (August 16th, 2013)–The Madison Mallards beat the Duluth Huskies on Friday night to claim their second Northwoods League championship and first since 2004. By a score of 12-3, the Mallards claimed the second game to clinch the sweep in convincing fashion.
The Mallards went 41-29 in the regular season and earned a spot in the post season behind a first place finish in the South Division in the first half. The Mallards came into both of their postseason series as underdogs, but they managed to overcome the odds for their second league title. After winning in three games against Lakeshore, the Mallards swept the Huskies for the title.
Madison 12, Duluth 3
The Mallards were relentless as the poured on the runs early. The Mallards scored runs in each of the first five innings on Friday and scored all 12 of their runs in that span. The Mallards slugged 22 hits which included four doubles, a triple, and a pair of home runs from Joe McCarthy (Virginia) and Brock Stewart (Illinois State). They also drew four walks and took advantage of three Duluth errors.
Andrew Arenson (Carthage College) made the start for the Mallards and pitched well. Arenson pitched five innings and gave up one run while stranding several runners on base. After a pair of runs were allowed in the sixth inning, the Mallards were able to shut down the Huskies with three scoreless innings to finish the game and win the title.
Joe McCarthy was named the Summer Collegiate World Series MVP after his monster series. In addition to going 5/6 with four runs, four RBI, and one home run on Friday, McCarthy went 2/4 with two RBI and a run scored in game one.
