Gosselin is the 110th former Northwoods League Player to debut in MLB
Rochester, MN – Former Madison Mallard Philip Gosselin was called up by the Atlanta Braves on Friday, August 16. Gosselin is the 110th former Northwoods League player to reach the Major League level.
Gosselin, who played collegiately at the University of Virginia, played for the Madison Mallards during the 2008 season, and was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 5th round of the 2010 MLB draft.
During the 2008 season with the Mallards Gosselin hit .270 in 55 games. Gosselin ended up tied for the league lead in triples with seven. He also stole 7 bases and drove in 24 RBI.
Gosselin began his minor league career in 2010 with the Rome Braves in the South Atlantic League and hit .294 in 57 games. He hit 7 home runs and had 37 RBI to go along with 17 doubles and 8 stolen bases. Gosselin was promoted towards the end of the season and finished his year with Myrtle Beach in the Carolina League. He spent the 2012 season in AA with Mississippi in the Southern League.
During the 2013 season Gosselin started the year in AA with Mississippi and was promoted to AAA Gwinnett after 59 games. Gosselin was hitting a combined .258 with 13 doubles, 34 RBI and 6 stolen bases between the two teams.
In his Major League debut on Friday Gosselin entered the game against the Nationals in the top of the 10th inning as a defensive replacement at second base. The first batter of the inning, Ryan Zimmerman, grounded out to Gosselin at second. Following a walk to Bryce Harper, Jayson Werth hit into an inning ending double play that started with Shortstop Andrelton Simmons and was turned at second by Gosselin.
