Waterloo, IA – The Waterloo Bucks have announced infielder/outfielder David Kerian will return to Waterloo for his second season in 2014. Kerian (pronounced KEER-ee-un), a junior at the University of Illinois, is the third player to be named to the Bucks’ roster for the team’s 20th season.
Last season for Waterloo, Kerian hit .297 in 58 games with six home runs and 39 RBI. The 6’2”, 195-pounder stole 18 bases and finished the year with a .415 slugging percentage. Kerian played 40 games at first base for the Bucks and hit .304 with four home runs versus right-handed pitchers.
“Having a player like David return for another summer is big for us both offensively and defensively,” said Waterloo field manager Travis Kiewiet. “Offensively, his switch hitting ability causes matchup problems for the opponent as he is a tough out from both sides of the plate. Defensively, he is able to play multiple positions which helps give us more options when putting together a lineup. I think I can speak for the fans of the Cedar Valley in that everyone is excited to have David back for another season.”
A native of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, Kerian was a first-team All-Big Ten selection for the Fighting Illini last season, hitting .313 with one homer, 39 RBI, 23 stolen bases, and a .390 on-base percentage. Kerian finished with a .395 slugging percentage, as he started 52 of the 53 games he played.
Born February 9, 1993, Kerian attended Bishop Heelan Catholic High School in Sioux City, Iowa where he was drafted in the 42nd round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft by the Washington Nationals. As a senior, Kerian hit .508 with 14 home runs, 44 RBI, a 1.038 slugging percentage, and a .601 on-base percentage. David is the son of Steve and Tina Kerian.
The Bucks will open the 2014 season on the road versus the Rochester Honkers on May 27, but return to Waterloo for their home opener versus Rochester on May 28.
