Red Wing Native Boldt was a 22nd Round Draft by Boston in the 2013 MLB Draft

(Rochester, Minn)– The Rochester Honkers Baseball Club announced today that Red Wing, Minn. native, and current Nebraska Cornhusker, Ryan Boldt will join the team this summer.

Boldt, a 6-foot-2, 198-pound freshman outfielder was schedule to play for the Honkers in 2013 as a high school senior, but due to a late season knee injury, was sidelined to rehab before attending Nebraska.

Currently Boldt is hitting .342 with seven doubles, 14 RBIs and is 5-7 in stolen bases.  He leads the Huskers in stolen bases and doubles, and is third overall in average, all as a true freshman.  He has started 22-21 games in centerfield for the 14-9 Huskers, and has a perfect 1.000 fielding average, committing zero errors with 50 total putouts.

Boldt’s accolades are many and speak for themselves.  A predictable first round draft pick in 2013, Boldt slipped to the 22nd round after suffering a minor knee injury.  He was tabbed as the seventh best high school prospect in the country by Baseball America and was vying to become the highest drafted Minnesota prep player since Joe Mauer was drafted No. 1 overall by the Minnesota Twins in 2001.  He was ranked as the No. 15 overall recruit and the No. 3 outfielder in the nation by Perfect Game USA.

In 2012, Boldt helped the Team USA 18U to a gold medal in South Korea, by setting Team USA and International Baseball Federation 18U World Championships record with 12 total stolen bases and 11 runs scored. He was the only player in the tournament to hit double figures in either category.  He also set a single-game tournament record with five stolen bases in an 11-1 win over Colombia.

Boldt is the cousin of the Husker’s junior starting infielder, Pat Kelly, who is also a Red Wing, Minn. native.  Nebraska is at Kansas State, tonight, Wednesday, March 26th, before returning home for a three-game home stand versus UNLV beginning on Friday.

The Rochester Honkers 21st season begins on May 27th when the Waterloo Bucks prance into Mayo Field for a 7:05pm first pitch.  The Honkers will play 72 games in 2014 (36 home, 36 away).  Season Tickets, Bonus Books, Suites and Patios are now available. Call the Rochester Honkers office at 507-289-1170 for more information.  The Honkers are also looking for host families for the 2014 season and ask all interested parties to call the business office for more information.
