Over, Slade and Pondick add experience and depth to Mallards pitching staff
Madison, Wis. – The Madison Mallards have announced the signing of right-handed pitchers Devin Over and Max Slade from the University of Connecticut, and Alex Pondick from Montevallo University.
Over, a 6’1”, 204-pound red-shirt sophomore from the University of Connecticut will come to Madison following his second season playing for the Huskies. So far in 2014, Over is 0-1 with a 2.22 ERA in 24.1 innings of work.
Prior to red-shirting his sophomore season, Over had a successful freshman campaign where he made five apperances and posted an ERA of 1.69 in 5.1 innings pitched.
Originally from Windsor, Connecticut, he played four years of high school baseball at Windsor High School. He was an all-state selection while serving as the team captain in 2011 and an All-Central Connecticut Conference selection in both 2010 and 2011. Following the 2011 season, he was also named to the Northeast All-Region First Team by Rawlings.
Slade, a 5’11”, 184-pound righty from the University of Connecticut will come to Madison following his red-shirt sophomore season with the Huskies. This season, he is 2-2 with an ERA of 2.02 in 26.1 innings.
In 2013, he appeared in 12 games for the Huskies, including one start and finished with a 3.80 ERA in 21.1 innings. He held opponents without a run in seven of his 12 appearances. Slade redshirted in 2012 and then pitched for the Mystic Schooners of the New England Collegiate Baseball League in the summer of 2012 where he struck out nine batters in 11 innings of work.
He played three years of varsity baseball at Cheshire High School. As a senior in 2011 he was a team captain and led the team to a Southern Connecticut Conference title. He earned all-area recognition from 2009-2011 and was named team MVP his junior season.
Pondick, a 6’2”, 185-pound freshman righty from the University of Montevallo will be a Mallard after his first season playing with the Falcons. In his freshman season, Pondick is 5-4 in 14 appearances and has compiled 37 strikeouts.
Pondick hails from Southside, Alabama where he starred at Southside High School. As a junior in 2012 he was 12-3 with ten complete games and a 2.04 ERA in 113 innings pitched. That year he led his team to Class 5A State Championship Series. He went 4-0 in his four post season starts. Following his junior season he was selected to the Gadsden Messenger All-Messenger team and the All-Etowah County team.
