Grafton, WI – Once again a pair of Spiders from the University of Richmond will join the Lakeshore Chinooks for the 2017 season. Following in the footsteps of Richmond teammates like Michael Morman, Doug Kraeger, Keenan Bartlett, and Kurtis Brown will be pitcher Peter Bovenzi and outfielder DJ Lee and (Richmond University).
Peter Bovenzi is currently pitching for Richmond in his sophomore season. The 6’4 right-hander from Leomister, MA made ten appearances in his freshman campaign of 2016, striking out 29 batters, including outings versus North Carolina-Wilmington and The Citadel in which he fanned six, while walking only 12 in 28.1 innings. This year, Bovenzi has been working out of the Spiders’ bullpen, pitching 13 innings in six appearances with nine strikeouts and four walks.
DJ Lee, a redshirt sophomore from Frankfort, IL, is a speedy outfielder who made 44 starts last season for the Spiders and hit .270 with ten multi-hit games. On two separate occasions, Lee finished a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. The son of former Chicago Cub Derek Lee, DJ will patrol centerfield for the Spiders and bat near the top of the order. In the early weeks of the season, Lee is hitting .250 with a .308 on-base percentage and has stolen four bases in four attempts. Playing on the fast track at Kapco Park, Lee’s speed will add to an already potent corps of outfielders.
You can catch your first glimpse of the 2017 Chinooks roster on Saturday, June 3rd when Lakeshore takes on the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters at 6:35pm at Kapco Park.
