49ers head to Madison this summer

Madison, Wis. – The Madison Mallards have announced the signing of two University of North Carolina-Charlotte players, catcher Harris Yett and left-handed pitcher Matt Horkey. The pair are both steady contributors to the 49ers squad and will join the Mallards this summer.

Yett, a 6’0”, 207-pound catcher from Charlotte, N.C. will spend his summer in Madison. Yett, a redshirt sophomore, transferred to UNC Charlotte after a year at Walters State Community College in which he hit .360 with 12 home runs and 68 RBI. His performance led to TCCAA First Team All-Conference honors. Previously, Yett played high school ball at South Meck High School where he led his team to a state title in 2013. At the conclusion of his high school career, Yett earned an All-American honor from Perfect Game.

So far this season, Yett has started 20 games and totaled 72 at bats. He sports a .194 average, has knocked in nine runs and hit a home run. Yett has proved to be a consistent backstop as he has yet to make an error and has caught all five who have attempted to steal while he is behind the plate.

Horkey, a 6’0”, 198-pound lefty from Greensboro, N.C. will head to Madison after his Junior season in Charlotte. He has shown to be a consistent contributor to the 49ers squad since his freshman year.  As a sophomore, he appeared in 13 games which resulted in just one earned run. He threw 53.2 innings, tallying a pair of saves and striking out 24.

In the 2017 campaign, Horkey has pitched 12.1 innings.
