(Rochester Minn.) – The Rochester Honkers announced today the signing of right-handed pitcher Spencer Johnson from Wayne State College. Johnson pitched for Rochester last summer before an injury shut him down. He made five starts, posting a 1-1 record with 12 strikeouts in 24.2 innings of work.
Johnson is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound junior from Centennial, Colo. As a junior at Grandview High School, he hit .533 from the plate with two home runs as well as winning four games with a save with a 2.73 ERA on the mound. During his final high school season, he was named All-Centennial League first team as well as being named to the Senior All-State Game in 2013. Spencer threw for a 5-1 record and 1.52 ERA. He struck out 34 batters in 46 innings. He helped his team win back-to-back All-Centennial League championships.
He spent his first two years of college at Northern Colorado in Greely, Colo. As a freshmen, Johnson appeared in four games, striking out three batters in 2.1 innings. He was redshirted his second year before transferring to Wayne State College. Spencer appeared in 10 games during his first season with the Wildcats. He finished with a 0-3 record and 8.68 ERA. In 28 innings, he earned 23 strikeouts with nine walks.
This season, Spencer is 0-1 in seven games. In six innings, he has three strikeouts and four walks. Wayne State is 23-19 this season with a 18-12 conference record which is fourth in the NSIC. The Wildcats travel to Minneapolis, Minn. on Wednesday for a doubleheader at Concordia-St. Paul before a weekend series at home against Augustana (S.D).
The Rochester Honkers 24th season begins on Tuesday, May 30th when the team hosts the Mankato Moondogs in their home opener at Mayo Field at 7:05 pm. The NEW 5-Game Packs are available now!
