The Houston Astros lead the way with seven former Northwoods League players

Rochester, Minn. – Spring Training is in full swing, and the third annual MLB Spring Breakout series began on March 19 and runs through March 22. Eighty-four Northwoods League alums have been selected to compete in this event, a significant increase from last year’s total of fifty-nine players.

The Northwoods League alumni are headlined by JJ Wetherholt (MLB’s #5 overall prospect) and Charlie Condon (MLB’s #70 overall prospect). The Houston Astros have the most Northwoods League alumni represented, with seven alums on their roster. This event includes hundreds of the best prospects in Major League Baseball, showcasing the future stars of the game. The Northwoods League experienced a League record 39 alums who made their Major League debut in 2025, with 11 of them participating in the 2025 Spring Breakout. Having completed its’ 32nd season, the Northwoods League is the largest organized baseball league in history with 26 teams, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind. A valuable training ground for coaches, umpires, and front office staff, over 410 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including three-time All-Star and 2016 Roberto Clemente Award winner Curtis Granderson, three-time Cy Young Award winner and two-time World Series Champion Max Scherzer (TOR), two-time World Series Champions Ben Zobrist and Brandon Crawford and World Series Champion Chris Sale (ATL).
