Thunder Bay 4, Alexandria 2 The Thunder Bay Border Cats took the game from Alexandria 4-2 Monday night at Knute Nelson Memorial Park. The first five innings were scoreless, but the final four saw a combined six runs.

Teague Tames River Bats

Kyle Teague (Oakland) led the Lunkers to a 9-1 victory over the St. Cloud River Bats Sunday. Teague threw 7.0 innings of one run baseball while striking out six River Bats. Teague is now 2-0 on the season with a 0.67 ERA. Teague’s command is one of the best in the NWL and has only allowed four walks in 27 innings pitched.

Riggins Hitting Beats Rafters

Madison Mallard, Harold Riggins (North Carolina State), was instrumental in helping the Mallards beat the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 8-2 at Witter Field. Riggins was 2-for-4 on the night with four RBI and one run scored. One of his hits was a homerun, his first of the season. Riggins hit .331 for the NC State Wolfpack this spring with 12 homeruns which was second on the team.

Alexandria 6, Rochester 0 The Beetles took Sunday’s game 6-0 against the Rochester Honkers at Mayo Field in Rochester. Alexandria out-hit the Honkers 12-5 and were led by starting pitcher Lindsey Caughel (Stetson) who moves to 2-1 on the season.

Jones Throws Gem

University of Portland right handed pitcher, Owen Jones, threw 7.0 innings for the Bullfrogs to help beat the Eau Claire Express 2-1. Jones struck out seven while only giving up one run. Jones led Portland with a record of 4-2 with an extremely low ERA of 2.56. Jones and his Express are currently 10-6 and .5 games ahead of the Wisconsin Woodchucks.

Smith Stays Hot

Jordan Smith (St. Cloud State) had an absolutely great performance on Saturday night helping the Stingers beat the Thunder Bay Border Cats 12-7. Smith finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Smith finished the 2010 St. Cloud season at .457 batting average for the Huskies and an amazing 43 extra base hits. He also had 17 stolen bases as a freshman with and fielding percentage of .991. Smith recently hit the first home run in Willmar Stingers franchise history.

Saturday’s Action

La Crosse 5, Battle Creek 4 It took 10 pitchers, 17 hits, 16 walks, and three hours and 40 minutes to complete, but the La Crosse Loggers came out on the winning end of a 5-4 game against Battle Creek on Saturday night at Copeland Park.

Mueller Mows Down Bombers

Tony Mueller (Winona State) led his hometown La Crosse Loggers to a 5-2 win over the Battle Creek Bombers. Mueller threw 7.0 innings of two run baseball while striking out nine Bombers. The La Crosse native is currently 2-1 with a 2.95 ERA and is average a strike out an inning. For the Winona State Warriors, Mueller led the team on the mound with a 6-1 record and also was the team’s lead-off hitter. Tony hit an outstanding .439 with 27 extra base hits and 19 steals.

Pellegrino Has Huge Day at the Plate

Catcher Dan Pellegrino (California Riverside) had one of the best offensive nights in the NWL this 2010 season. Pellegrino went 4-for-5 with one run scored and an amazing six RBI. He also homered to raise his batting average to .286. The Riverside catcher hit .283 this season in 24 games and had a .988 fielding percentage for the Highlanders.

Friday Night Fun

Green Bay 8, Eau Claire 3 The Bullfrogs beat the Express Friday night by a score of 8-3 in front of a crowd of 1,603. Green Bay received a great pitching performance from the whole staff who threw an eight hitter while giving up three runs and striking out six.
