Burns Sparks Huskies

Andy Burns (Kentucky) propelled the Duluth Huskies over the Thunder Bay Border Cats Saturday night, 3-2. Burns stroked a lead-off double in the top of the ninth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly to give the Huskies the win. Burns hit a sacrifice fly of his own to score a run and finished 2-4 with the run scored and RBI.

Patterson Gives Huskies Sweep of Nightly Awards

Matt Patterson (Creighton) pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for his first win of the season for Duluth. Patterson entered with the game tied at two and shut-out the Border Cats the rest of the way, allowing just two hits and striking out one. Player of the Night Andy Burns scored the winning run in the top of the ninth and Patterson took care of the 'Cats in the bottom half for the Duluth 3-2 victory.

McClain Muscles Mallards to Victory

Adam McClain (Memphis) had a couple big at-bats late in the game Friday that ended when he muscled a grand slam over the left field wall at the Duck Pond. Rochester's Rance Roundy (UNLV) also had a night that is very worthy of mention.

Devan Kline (Central Michigan) punched out two in a scoreless ninth inning against Green Bay to pick up his sixth save for the 8-1 Eau Claire Express.Kline hasn't allowed a run in his six appearances totaling ten strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Gagnon Effective in Debut

Drew Gagnon (Long Beach State) arrived to Rochester, MN for the first time Wednesday, and on Thursday pitched the Rochester Honkers to a much needed victory. Gagnon made his debut for Rochester, starting on the hill against Mankato a day after the Honkers lost a pair of games to the MoonDogs (one a previous suspended game). Gagnon tossed six innings, allowing only three hits and one run while fanning nine. He departed the contest with a 4-1 lead and the Honkers were able to hold on for a 4-3 wins.

One full week is complete in the 2009 NWL season. The Eau Claire Express sit atop the South Division with a 6-1 record while the Alexandria Beetles are pacing the North at 5-2.

Fick Leads MoonDogs Over Honkers

Cody Fick (Evansville) stole the show in Wednesday's game with Rochester. Fick came a triple short of the cycle, going 4-5 with a run and three RBI. Fick raised his average 169 points to .269 with his outburst, pacing a 13-hit MoonDog attack against the Honkers. Fick delivered a two-run bomb to deep left field to put Mankato up 3-0 in the 3rd inning.
