Madison, WI – July 28, 2014. The Madison Mallards (12-13, 30-28) travel to Wausau to face the Wisconsin Woodchucks (15-9, 33-25) today at 6:35 pm.

On the mound for the Mallards is Christian Taugner (Brown). Taugner is 3-1 on the year with a 3.01 ERA, and in his last start he tossed 5.2 innings against the Green Bay Bullfrogs, allowing three runs on six hits in a 6-3 victory on July 16th.

He is scheduled to face Woodchucks starter Brian Howard, a 6’9”, 200-pound righty out of Texas Christian University. Howard has made five appearances and three starts for the Woodchucks and carries a 2.11 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 17 innings of work.

In his last start, he pitched five innings, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out four in a 6-4 win over the Kalamazoo Growlers.

Last night, the Mallards were held to two runs on four hits, falling to the Green Bay Bullfrogs by a score of 9-2.

Third baseman Pete Alonso (Florida) hit a 418-foot blast in the bottom of the second inning, but Bullfrogs designated hitter Ryan Howell (Chabot) had a three run shot in the first and added a solo home run in the fifth to lead the Bullfrogs with four RBIs.

The Bullfrogs scoring came in threes, scoring three in the first, three in the fourth, and three in the fifth inning.

Mallards starter Tyler Buffett (Oklahoma State) allowed six runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings of work while striking out three in the loss.

The Mallards currently sit 8.5 games back of first place in the Northwoods League South Division second half standings, and 3.5 games back of the second place Woodchucks and Kenosha Kingfish. Overall, the Mallards are 14 games behind the Lakeshore Chinooks and three games back of the Woodchucks.

For the Mallards to make the playoffs, they must win the second half or finish second in the overall standings.

The Mallards stay in Wausau tomorrow to wrap up their two game series at 6:35 pm. They then travel to La Crosse to play the La Crosse Loggers in a home-and-home doubleheader. The first game will be played in La Crosse at 12:05 pm, and game two is scheduled for 7:05 pm at the “Duck Pond” on Wednesday.
