June1PGAfter posting eight runs in the season opener a night ago, the Mallards picked up right where they left off in this morning’s game, scoring ten times on 20 hits in a 10-5 win over Battle Creek. This puts the Mallards at a 2-0 mark, giving them a strong start to opening week, presented by Edvest.

Zach Jarrett (UNC-Charlotte) hit the Mallards second home run of 2016, sending a 1-1 pitch over the wall in the first inning. Bringing in the Mallards second and third runs, Jarrett’s blast got the Mallards in a groove early. With the addition of four hits at the top of the order by Cameron Frost (Washington State) and a five-hit night by Lucas Halstead (Pacific), the Mallards were rolling on all cylinders.

Patrick Boyle (Drew University) turned in a strong performance as well, pitching five solid frames in which he allowed two runs. He definitely got the best of the matchup, as Bombers starter Scott Sency (Saginaw Valley) allowed five runs in the opening frame, the only inning he would pitch.

The Mallards had an eight run lead heading into the ninth inning, thanks to three shutdown innings between Luke Matheny (Oklahoma State) and Brandon Casas (UNC-Charlotte). In the ninth, the Bombers were able to plate three on two hits sandwiched been a couple of wild pitches. It turned out to not be enough, as Madison’s lead was just too large.

The Mallards will look to turn back-to-back wins into a streak on Thursday, as they will take on the Rockford Rivets at 6:35 pm in Rockford. Mike Reitcheck (University of Pennsylvania) will take the hill for the Mallards after a solid season for the Quakers. The southpaw pitched in 52 innings across eight starts and one relief appearance in 2016, striking out 27 and posting a 3.96 ERA.

The Mallards will host their home opener on Friday, June 3rd when they take on the new Northwoods League affiliate Rockford Rivets.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm.  Single-game tickets for the 2016 season are on sale NOW!  Tickets are available for purchase by visiting MallardsBaseball.com, calling the Mallards ticket office at 608-246-4277, or stopping in the ticket office at 2920 N Sherman Ave.
