Madison, Wis. – The Northwoods League announced the 2017 All-Star Game rosters earlier this morning and three Madison Mallards made the cut. Centerfielder Doran Turchin (Illinois), shortstop Cole Daily (Notre Dame), and starting pitcher Simon Rosenblum-Larson (Harvard) were all selected to represent the Mallards in Wausau for the 2017 NWL All-Star Game that will be held on July 18.
Turchin, who just finished his sophomore year with the Fighting Illini, has been an impact player in the center of the Mallards lineup and outfield all season. Turchin has played 32 games and has recorded a hit in all but seven of them. Turchin has been the Mallards primary centerfielder and has made zero errors through 272 innings in the Mallards outfield. Turchin leads the team in RBI (34) and walks (31) and owns a .327 batting average. He currently has a 29-game on-base streak and has tallied four hits over his last three games.
Daily, who has played 36 games at shortstop this season, has been an impact leadoff for the Mallards offense. Daily leads the entire Northwoods League in both hits (53) and runs (42). Daily is batting .349 and also has proved to be a threat on the basepaths, stealing 13 bases. The Notre Dame sophomore has also shown incredible discipline at the plate as he has drawn 24 walks and struck out only 19 times in 148 at bats.
Rosenblum-Larson, a Harvard sophomore, has been the Mallards most effective starting pitcher so far this season. He leads the Mallards pitching staff in a number of important categories including ERA (1.11), strikeouts (35), and innings pitched (32.1). Rosenblum-Larson has given the Mallards a chance to win in every game he has pitched in as he has not given up multiple runs in a single outing yet this season. He also hasn’t issued more than two walks in a game this year.
The trio of Mallards will head to Wausau for the 2017 NWL All-Star game on July 18th to play against the NWL’s best and in front of major league scouts. This year's All-Stars were chosen in a vote by the 20 member teams of the Northwoods League. Ballots were cast by each team's field staff and media contacts.
The 2017 Northwoods League Home Run Derby and All-Star Game will be on Tuesday, July 18th at Athletic Park in Wausau, WI. Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. The Home Run Derby will start at 5:00 p.m. First pitch for the All-Star Game will be at 7:05 p.m. A meet and greet autograph session will occur from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in the Pepsi Community Park.
