The Madison Mallards (26-8) added to their first place win total with a 3-2 win over the Bullfrogs (12-22) Sunday afternoon. The game was called with the Mallards batting with two outs in the top of the seventh inning after a brief rain deluge left the field unplayable.

Justin Watland’s (San Jose State) scoreless inning streak was snapped at 20 innings in the bottom of the fourth inning when Green Bay scored two unearned runs to tie the game 2-2.

TURNING POINT

With two outs in the top of the fifth, Justice Bigbie (Western Carolina) lined a double over the right fielder’s head which scored Trevor Schwecke (UW Milwaukee) with the winning run. Manager Donnie Scott handed the ball over to Leon Hunter (North Carolina A&T) in the bottom of the fifth, and Hunter struck out the first four in a row. For his two innings of scoreless relief Hunter earned his third win of the summer.

TOP MALLARDS

  • Justice Bigbie paced the Madison offense with two hits, a run scored, and his game winning double
  • Trevor Schwecke added two singles, a run scored and a walk
  • Trevor Boone (Oklahoma State) crushed a RBI triple to dead centerfield in the top of the seventh against a strong wind, and was credited with the hit and the RBI even though it did not change the official 3-2 final score
  • Justin Watland allowed only three hits and two unearned runs and struck out four Bullfrogs in his four innings pitched

NEXT UP

The first half champion Mallards finish the first part of the season with a two-game away and home series against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Monday night on the road and Tuesday evening in Madison. The Tuesday July 3 home game will start at 6:05 pm.  Come see the Mallards and a post-game performance by Run Forrest Run presented by MG&E.
