Madison, Wis. –  The Wisconsin Woodchucks (8-3, 20-27) came out on top in a shootout as they topped the Madison Mallards (2-8, 30-16) 21-12 at Warner Park on Saturday Night. The game’s 33 combined runs were the most in a Northwoods League game since June 13, 2013. Wisconsin first baseman Alex Toral delivered a pair of home runs that knocked in a total of seven runs and the Woodchucks collected a total of 23 hits in their offensive barrage. The Mallards climbed back into the ballgame thanks to a six-run sixth inning but the Woodchucks continued their torrid pace with the bats, scoring 19 runs over the course of four innings to pull away for good.

 

Turning Point

 

After demoralizing fifth and sixth innings that saw the Woodchucks score five and four runs respectively, the Mallards pulled back into the ballgame with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Mallards trailed 11-1 going into the frame and got the sticks going thanks to a two-run home run by Tyler Plantier (Richmond) and RBI hits by Drew Ober (UNC-Charlotte)and Trevor Boone (Oklahoma State). The Mallards had cut the score to 11-7 after the inning. However, the Woodchucks pulled away again, this time on a two-out grand slam by Toral. Wisconsin ended up totaling five runs in the frame and led 16-7 going into the eighth inning.

Top Mallards

  • Right fielder Trevor Boone delivered a two-run double in the Mallards six-run sixth inning and finished the nights with a pair of hits and three total RBI.
  • Centerfielder Drew Campbell (Louisville) collected three hits and knocked in a run in the loss.
  • Third baseman Tyler Plantier cranked his eleventh home run of the summer and totaled three hits while also drawing a walk.
  • Right fielder Drew Ober totaled two hits and knocked in two runs while also scoring twice.
  • Catcher Jesse Forestell (Western Michigan) had a pair of hits and knocked in a run while also reaching on a free pass.

Next Up

The Mallards take on the Woodchucks again tomorrow as first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM and gates will open at 11:30 AM.
