Madison, WI – June 6, 2012. The Madison Mallards (3-4) will finish their two game road trip and play the first of a three game series against the Green Bay Bullfrogs (3-4). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Joannes Stadium.
On Tuesday the Mallards were kept off of the scoreboard in a 2-0 loss to the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (4-3). The win gave the Rafters a sweep of the two game sereis and extended the Mallards losing streak to four games.
The loss spoiled another great outing by Mallards starting pitcher Alec Mills (UT-Martin), who threw 6.0 innings without allowing a run. His four strikeouts brought his season total to 17, tying him for the Northwoods League lead.
Mallards starting pitcher Matt LaMothe (Georgia State and College) will be given the ball to start the series on a good note. LaMothe (1-0) was the winning pitcher in his first start of the season, a 7-1 in over the Battle Creek Bombers (3-4). Over 5.0 innings of work he struck out four, while giving up three hits and one earned run.
The Bullfrogs will send out left-hander Ben Graff (San Francisco) to the hill. So far in 2012 he has made two appearances, his last being a start in a 9-0 win over the Wisconsin Woodchucks (4-3). During the start Graff (1-0) went 6.0 innings, and didn’t allow a run while striking out six.
Second baseman Luis Munoz (Coffeyville CC) has been on a tear in his last four games. Over that stretch he has hit safely in every game, brining his average up to .333. Since coming to the Mallards he has earned a reputation of delivering hits in key situations, and will be looked to to deliver against the Bullfrogs.
The series features an intriguing battle of disciplined hitting and deceptive pitching. The Bullfrogs have put together the most patient lineup the Mallards have faced to date, their 48 walks lead the Northwoods League. On the other hand Mallards pitchers have been fantastic at getting hitters to chase out of the strike zone, their 76 strikeouts is tops in the Northwoods Leauge.
The Mallards returns to the “Duck Pond” on Thursday June 7th to play games two and three of their series against Green Bay. That night will be Iceberg Awareness Night Presented by Spectrum Brands at the “Duck Pond”.
